Process selection should not be driven by prestige
Laser cladding has major technical advantages, but not every worn component needs them. If the objective is structural dimensional build-up before HVOF, a controlled MIG/MAG repair can be more rational. If a thick powder hardface is needed, PTA may provide the right balance of performance and cost.
When MIG/MAG can be enough
For simple dimensional build-up on compatible substrates, conventional weld deposition can restore geometry economically before machining or a separate wear coating.
When PTA is the better tool
PTA is well suited to NiCrBSi, cobalt alloys and WC composites when metallurgical bonding, millimeter-scale hardfacing and productive deposition are required.
When laser is justified
Use laser where dilution, distortion, narrow heat input and highly controlled deposition are genuinely critical. The most expensive process is not automatically the best repair.
